Fiber: General Information Both llama and alpaca fiber are warm, soft and easy-to-handle. The fiber insulates better than sheep wool because each hair is hollow. West Mountain Farm’s fiber is 100% farm-raised and hand-sheared. We shear our animals each spring, and have our fiber cleaned and processed at Zeilinger Wool Company (www.zwool.com) in Michigan. We have all of our llama fiber dehaired to create LLAMA DOWN. LLAMA DOWN is comparable to cashmere, qiviut and vicuna. Some of the clean fiber is made into bats for quilts, comforters, mattress toppers, and area rugs. Gayle spins, weaves, knits and felts, while Lars felts fun figures and hats. We have created many fun and wonderful products from our llama and alpaca fiber. You can make your own creations using our clean rovings or clouds of fiber, which we have available for sale.
